MLA Wolverine harriers host inaugural elementary cross country meet
Members of the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines cross country team – backed by Co-Coaches Matt Anderson and Kyle Blomgren – hosted an inaugural elementary cross country meet on Friday afternoon, October 9, at Munson Field in Mountain Lake.
The 79 participants were students in pre-kindergarten through grade six from Mountain Lake Public Elementary School and Mountain Lake Christian Elementary. Pre-K and kindergarten runners ran a course of 400 meters, first- and second-graders ran 800 meters, runners in grades three and four ran 1200 meters and fifth- and sixth-grade runners ran 1600 meters.
The course was not run on the track, but rather in “cross country style.” There was a 400 meter loop and an 800 meter loop. The 400 meter course went around the football practice field and tennis courts, while the 800 meter loop started and finished on the football practice field – but in between went around the softball and baseball fields, along the fence of the track past Hiebert Greenhouse and around the tennis courts.
The high school Wolverine harriers demonstrated to their younger counterparts how to properly warm up, stretch – and ran with and encouraged the elementary runners along the route.
