Mountain Lake’s parks, lake trail now officially tobacco-free

City’s newest well – #7 – is online; A water supply asset

At the Monday, June 22 meeting of the Mountain Lake City Council, Luke Ewald of Des Moines Valley Health and Human Services had approached the council to present information on “Start Noticing,” a Cottonwood County and Jackson County coalition working to eliminate the harmful effects of tobacco use and exposure. At that meeting, Ewald had asked the council to consider making the city’s parks and Mountain Lake Trail tobacco-free.

After discussing a draft policy, and staff preparation of a tobacco-free parks/trail policy (that excludes Island View Campground) the policy became a reality, council members voting to enact a Tobacco-Free Parks Policy at their Monday, July 6 meeting.

Well #7 an integral city water source

City Engineer Andy Kehren of Bolton & Menk, Inc., informed the council at the meeting that the city’s newest well – #7 – is complete, online and is a water supply asset.

He noted that this fall, some painting will be completed in the city’s well house.

In other business

* Transferred $15,765.85 to Street Department Reserve Funds and deducted $15,051.03 from Police Department Reserve Funds. The figures represent amounts that the two departments under spent, or over spent, in their budgets after considering revenues and expenses. The funds are reserved for future vehicle and equipment purchases.

* Approved Change Order #4 for the 2012-2014 Utility and Street Project following an explanation by Kehren.

* Approved Final Pay Estimate #18 of $487,221.56 to Kuechle Underground, Inc., for the 2012-2014 Utility and Street Project.

* Heard an explanation by Tammy Omdal of Northland Securities on the refunding process and timeline for refunding the $990,000 General Obligation Refunding Bonds Series 2015A. Council members approved the issuance of the refunding bonds.

* Read and discussed a letter received from Adam Sayles.

* Briefly discussed a letter received late in the day on Monday, July 6, from Rachel Yoder.

* Approved a resolution to permit gambling.

* Heard a Thank-You from the Mountain Lake Pow Wow Road Committee for the city’s $300 donation.
