Mountain Lake’s Annette Dick wins inaugural Cottonwood County Senior Spelling Bee

She is a former schoolteacher, and that choice of occupation, and the spirit of continual learning that accompanies it, certainly paid off on Saturday morning, April 25, for 91-year-old Annette Dick of Mountain Lake. Dick was the winner of the inaugural Cottonwood County Senior Spelling Bee – for 50-year-old spellers and “better” – in a contest held at the BARC (Business, Arts & Recreation Center) in Windom.
Dick topped the field of six county “seniors” at the microphone onstage to showcase their spelling skills. She decided to take up the challenge of the Bee, and encouraged other seniors, if they wanted, to participate – even just for the fun of it.
Coordinating the Senior Spelling Bee was Jackie Jurgens, of Windom, who hopes to make the competition an annual event. Pronouncer for the event was Joan Hunter of Windom.
