Red rumblings

Cobra wrestlers compete in Rumble on the Red; Borsgard 3rd in varsity, Holmberg 6th in JV

 

 

 

Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobra wrestlers spent the last two days in competition in the Northland, inside Fargo, North Dakota’s Fargodome during the 12th annual Rumble on the Red Wrestling Tournament.

The wrestling started Thursday, December 28, with the high school (varsity and and junior varsity) portion of the event (which uses 22 wrestling mats) concluding this afternoon (Friday, December 29). There were 85 varsity teams and 641 wrestlers competing in the high school tournament with teams from six different states. The youth individual tournament will be held tomorrow (Saturday, December 30).

The Cobras’ Alex Borsgard was the only varsity wrestler to advance to a medal. He finished in third at 145 pounds. He opened on Thursday with a fall, won two major decisions and pinned Gavin LeNoue of Wahpeton, North Dakota in 4:49 to earn the spot in the semifinals.

Two additional W/ML wrestlers opened today in a scramble for a medal, but found the going rough among very tough competition. At 113 pounds, Brett Willaby advanced to the quarterfinals, earning his 60th career victory with a first-round decision. He added a fall and a decision win, but lost 3-1 to to drop into the consolation bracket. Zach Spinks, at 138 pounds, also moved on to today’s quarterfinals, winning by a fall, a four-overtime decision and a 5-2 decision. He then lost an 11-2 major decision to Willie Von Ruden of Medford to drop into the consolation bracket

Other Cobras in action included Kade Sammons, who went 1-2 in the tournament at 120 pounds; Hunter Ekstrom, 0-2 at 126 and Nick Curry, 0-2 wrestling unattached at 138 pounds. The Cobras have varsity wrestlers from 152 pounds through heavyweight class.

In junior varsity, Micah Holmberg ended in sixth in a full 64-man 106 pound bracket.

The Cobras return to action on Friday, January 5, wrestling against Bird Island-Lake Lillian-Olivia-Danube (BOLD)/Canby at BOLD High School.
