Fourth quarter blues

Wolverines play undefeated RRC tough; Lose lead in waning minutes in game held at Munson Field due to waterlogged Lamberton gridiron

A WATERLOGGED LAMBERTON gridiron – due to this past week’s heavy rains – moved the Red Rock Central (RRC) Homecoming football game to Munson Field in Mountain Lake, and also precipitated an hour earlier kick-off time. The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines, under Head Coach Tim Kirk, played the Falcons tough, but in the end, the squad suffered again from fourth quarter blues, ending in a loss. RRC scored with just over two minutes remaining in the game to remain undefeated for the season, dropping MLA 20-14. An attempted MLA rally in the final seconds was halted by a Falcon interception. At the half, RRC held a 13-6 (MLA two-point conversion failed). Back on the field in the third quarter, the Wolverines rallied to claim the lead. Quarterback Abraham Stoesz scampered for a seven-yard run, and then threw a seven-yard pass to Drake Harder for the TD. A Stoesz-to-Adam Karschnik toss nailed the two-point conversion, and the Wolverines were up 14-13. The Maroon-and-Silver clung to the lead until RRC scored with 2:13 remaining, the Falcons’ Garrett Marsh with a one-yard quarterback sneak. With 30 seconds left, RRC’s Austin Irlbeck nabbed an interception to stop any Wolverine thoughts of a comeback. The Wolverines are 3-3 on the season and will host Heron Lake-Okabena on Friday, October 13 with a 7 p.m. kick-off.
