MLAF presents grant awards

Five entities receive monies

 

A NUMBER OF grant recipient representatives were on hand at the beach near the boat landing at Mountain Lake on Wednesday, July 19 to receive funds from the Mountain Lake Area Foundation (MLAF). Those group agents included, front, from left, Annette Kunkel (Mountain Lake Public School), Misty Karschnik (Good Sam Color Jam), Mike Nelson (Heritage Village), Dave Bucklin (City of Mountain Lake’s Lake Commission) and Emily Mathiowetz (Mountain Lake Police Department). The Mountain Lake Area Foundation (MLAF) presented grant monies to five entities on Wednesday, July 19.

Grant awards were presented to:

+ $674.95 – Mountain Lake Public School for alternative classroom seating in the sixth-grade classroom of Annette Kunkel, including wobble cushions, resistance bands, chair socks, back jacks and stability balls in order to make the learning environment better for all types of learners and providing opportunities to wiggle and fidget. The benefits include increased focus and fewer disruptions to others. Distributed from the Mountain Lake Area Foundation Education Fund.

+ $400 – Mountain Lake Police Department for bike helmets and reflective blinking lights to distribute at a Bike Rodeo and throughout the summer. Distributed from the interest earnings in the Mountain Lake Area Healthcare Endowment. Fund.

+ 1,124 – Good Samaritan Society of Mountain Lake for support of the 2017 Good Sam Color Jam. Distributed from interest earnings in the Mountain Lake Area Healthcare Endowment Fund.

+ $1,000 – City of Mountain Lake’s Lake Commission for the Lawcon Park Beach Project, including the construction of benches, a pergola and fire ring by the Mountain Lake Public High School ag department at the beach near the boat landing. Distributed from interest earnings in the Mountain Lake Community Endowment Fund.

+ $1,000 – Heritage Village Museum for the purchase of a desk/archival storage unit in order to provide a resource center within the Welcome Center for those interested in researching Mountain Lake history and family genealogy. Distributed from interest earnings in the Mountain Lake Community Endowment Fund.

Also receiving funding was the Mountain Lake Public School’s Invention Project, spearheaded by Mountain Lake Public High School Principal Michelle Larson. The science camp received a total of $5,000 in the form of an Opportunity Grant from the MLAF and the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF). The MLAF presented $2,500 towards the grant, which was matched with a SWIF grant of $2,500. The MLAF money comes from a spring fundraiser at which Mountain Lake native son Noel Rahn was the keynote speaker. At the fundraiser, Rahn donated $10,000 to the MLAF, from which he indicated the amount to be given towards the Opportunity Grant. (The remaining $7,500 was used by the MLAF to activate a project fund – the “Noel Rahn Project Fund.”

About the MLAF

The MLAF is a 501 (c) (3), and was established in 1996 to attract and administer charitable funds for the benefit of the Mountain Lake Community. It is a permanent resource for the community and provides leadership and financial resources in the form of grants, to meet the needs and economic and social growth of the community.

The MLAF Board of Directors includes Wade Nelson, chair; Tim Swoboda, treasurer; Misty Karschnik, secretary; Vern Peterson, Brian Harder, Joyce Bucklin, Sharron Hanson, Cheryl Hiebert, Pat Weir and Kris Langland.
