Wayne Ellis Green was born on April 15, 1927, in Selma Township, Cottonwood County, the son of Winfield and Gladys (Nichols) Green. He grew up on a farm and attended country school through eighth grade and then Mountain Lake High School, graduating in 1944. Wayne worked on the family farm for two years. He then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota for one winter.

Returning home, he worked for Herbert Hoek. From 1949 to 1951, Wayne built a small house on the family farm.

On August 24, 1951, Wayne married Margaret June Wille at the Alliance Church in Mountain Lake. They lived on the family farm until 1956, when they moved to a farm in Adrian Township in Watonwan County. Wayne worked for Moore Manufacturing and Toro for several of years until they started a dairy farm. They operated a dairy farm for over 30 years.

Wayne and Margaret were blessed with four boys. A tornado destroyed their dairy barn in 1963. In the following years, they built a new barn, silos, a new house, machine shed and other buildings. They retired from dairying in April 1994. They continued farming until Wayne retired.
