Wrestling away at State NYWA

W/ML Cobra Youth Wrestlers compete in season-ending tourneys

 

 

A contingent of Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobra Youth Wrestlers were wrestling away at the 2017 NYWA (Northland Youth Wrestling Association) State Tournament and State Invite this past weekend. The competitions were held from Thursday, March 30 to Sunday, April 2, in the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Below are the results of those W/ML Youth Cobra Wrestlers competing:

+ Kade Sammons – Wrestled to the Grades 7/8 Championship at 120 pounds. Sammons won his opening match by fall in 1:29 over Ronald Roy of Deer River. He went on to decision Willmar’s Jonas Anez, 6-3, in the quarter-finals; defeated Lukas Paulson of Becker, 4-3 in the semis and took the championship with a 5-4 decision over Jerrey Simes from Litchfield.

+ Kole Haberman – Was 4th in Grades 3/4 at 105 pounds. In Haberman’s first match of the tourney, he was a 14-1 major decision victory of Simon Gades of ANML. He went on to claim a 4-3 decision of Deer River’s Clayton Bartick before losing in a fall at 1:45 to Caleb Wald (the eventual champ at the weight) of Wayzata. In the wrestlebacks, Haberman nailed a fall in 1:40 over Jaden Reisch of Luverne. Haberman was defeated for third-place by Ryan Kuyper of Northfield, losing in a fall at 0:51.

+ Additional W/ML Youth Cobras in the State Meet – For Grades 7/8, Anthony Cihak wrestled at 140 pounds and Caden Swoboda; in Grades 5/6, Tucker Renquist wrestled at 60 pounds, for Grades 3/4, Ian Richardson competed at 115 pounds and Hunter Konz at 110 pounds and in Grades 1/2, Lane Caldwell werestled at 85 pounds and Jacob Lopez competed at 45 pounds.

2017 NYWA State Invite

+ Kaden Haberman – Finished as runner-up in the 160-pound weight bracket for Grades 7/8 Round Robin. The champion was Carter Holtz of Kimball.

+ Micah Holmberg – Finished third in Grades 7/8 at 95 pounds. Holmberg won his opening match by fall over Griffin Schneider of Waconia, then lost 15-7 to Carter Ringate of St. Michael/Albertville. He came wrestling back with a fall over Minneota’s Truman Wambeke and claimed third with a 10-4 decision over Isaiah Thompson of K-W.

+ Thavien Xayachak – Was third in a five-man Round Robin at 80-pounds in Grades 7/8. Xayachak won three of his five matches, one by fall over Trey Schmidt of Atwater/Cosmos/Grove City, one in a 4-3 decision over Brainerd/Pillager’s Grifffin Carlson and one by bye. This pair of losses were by falls to Teagyn Ludwig of EVW and James Erickson of Aitkin.

+ Oshane Bent – Finished third in the Kindergarten 40-pound weight class. He opened the tourney with a fall to the eventual champion, Peyton Reed of Deer River, but then roared back to nab the bronze. Bent received a bye in his next match, defeated William Dircks of Brainerd/Piallager 12-0 and earned third with a fall over Byron’s Brody Sturm.

+ Keymoni Bent – Was fourth at 61 pounds in Grades 1/2. Bent lost his opening match by fall to Holdingford’s Lane Patrick. Had a bye in his next match in the loser’s bracket, but rallied to advance to the third-place match by downing Alexander Murpphy of Border West, in a 4-2 decision. While going for third, Bent was defeated 6-2 in a reprise match with Lane Patrick of Holdingford to earn fourth-place.

+ Phoukanh (Preston) Xayachak – Finished fourth at 65 pounds in Grades 5/6. Xayachak was the winner in his opening match against Jace Deyoung of Stewartville by medical forfeit. In his next match, Xayachak was defeated by Eli Hamberger from Watertown-Mayer in a 4-0 decision. Coming back, Xayachak faced Tygan Long for UNITED, and claimed a 6-0 victory. In the match for third, Xayachak lost a 6-0 decision to Brainerd’s Cade Ostrowski to finish fourth.

+ Ethan Pohlman – Was fourth at 150 pounds in Grades 7/8. Pohlman was defeated by fall in his opening match by Logan Sherwood of Atwater/Cosmos/Grove City. In the loser’s bracket, Pohlman claimed a pair of wins, 6-2 over Ottertail’s William Ehlert and 10-3 over Keith Swenson of Windom/Mountain Lake before losing to Northfield’s Mason Pagel by fall in the third-place match.

+ Additional W/ML Youth Cobras in the State Invite – Wrestling in Grades 7/8 were, at 235 pounds, Alexander Altman and in the 115-pound weight class, Trenton Renquist; competing in Grades 5/6 was Damion Pohlman, wrestling at 84 pounds and wrestling at 60 pounds in Grades 3/4 was Mathew Voehl.
