MLPS School Board holds regular March meeting

Approve spring sports coaches, volunteers

The Mountain Lake Public School (MLPS) School Board met on Monday, March 20 to address the group’s regular March meeting agenda.

Approved were coaches and volunteers for spring sports:

+ Track and Field –

  • Head Coach Scott Boelke.
  • Assistant Coach Jaime Banks.
  • Assistant Coach Andrea Brinkman.
  • Assistant Coach Sarah Tailowright.

+Softball –

  • Head Coach Brian Hopwood.
  • “B” Squad Coach Shawn Naas.
  • Junior High Coach Kjell Eken.
  • Junior High Coach Hayley Faber.

+ Baseball –

  • Head Coach Tim Snyder.
  • Assistant Coach Tim Kirk.
  • Junior High Coach Spenser Kipfer.
  • Junior High Coach Isaac Hildebrandt.
  • Volunteer Blake Spinks.

+ Golf –

  • Head Coach Chad Pedersen.

+ Trap Shooting League –

  • Head Coach Stephen Funk.
  • Volunteers Brian Bergling, Wade Pfeiffer, Al O’Bannon, Rich Gisch, Jon Oanes, Dave Ahlbrect, Kevin Ella, Kirk Kratovil, Clint Marcy and Ron Becker.

Discontinue position of pool coordinator/part-time custodian

Due to the closing of the school district’s indoor swimming pool, there was no need for a pool coordinator or a part-time custodian to clean the pool and locker room areas.

The board approved the discontinuation of those positions, held by Sandy Melheim, effective Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

In other business

+ Approved the tentative 2017-2018 school calendar, with the first day of school on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 and the last day of school Thursday, May 31, 2018. An Open House prior to the start of that school year will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017.

+ Approved the 2016-2017 Achievement and Integration Budget/Plan. Revisions were made to the summer 2017 program, and have been submitted to the Minnesota Department of Education. The plan created is for the Red Rock Ridge Integration Collaborative, a joint effort between the three area school districts of Mountain Lake Public, Jackson County Central and Windom Area.

+ Approved the internal posting for part-time summer helpers. The rate of pay is $9.60 pe hour.

+ Accepted donations from the following:

  • POET Biorefining for the Mountain Lake Area FFA Banquet – $250.
  • Mountain Lake Insurance for the 2017 track and field team – $200.
  • Mountain Lake Fire and Rescue for Windom/Mountain Lake Cobra Wrestling state trip – $250.
  • Mountain Lake Area wolverin Booster club for Annual Staff camera equipment – $1,290.32.

+ Received an updated listing of upcoming school board meetings:

  • Tuesday, April 18 (Date Change), Regular Meeting, 6 p.m., Room #1.
  • Monday, May 15, Regular Meeting, 6 p.m., Room #1.
  • Monday, June 26, Regular Meeting, 6 p.m., Room #1.
  • Monday, July 17, Regular Meeting, 6 p.m., Room #1.

+ Heard an e-mail report from MLPS School Board Director and Building Committee Chair Tim Swoboda updating the work of the committee. The Building Committee that was to be held this evening (Monday, March 20), as been postponed until Wednesday, March 29, beginning at 6 p.m. in Room #1. Paul Youngquist, architect of Architects Rego + Younquist (ARY), is continuing to work on identifying costs and how to enlarge the commons area and the committee is owrking with administration on the educational adequacy of the plans and making sure that spaces and square footage are all being identified and accounted for.

+ Learned that the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) is offering a Building a High-Performance School Board Team: Phase III workshop. It is designed for school board members who have atttended Phase I and Phase II, but others are also welcome.

+ Received the following information from MLPS Superintendent Bill Strom:

  • The Interview Committee for the Elementary Principal position will include (at least) the following – School Board Members Chad Pedersen and Julie Brugman, High School Principal Michelle Larson and Superintendent Strom, Elementary teachers Annette Kunkel and Kim Blomgren and Consultant Ruth Cole from Lewis Training and Development. Meeting and greeting the candidates, and giving a tour of the building will be Elementary Secretary Gail Erickson, and another yet to be named.
  • Requests have been made to add coaches to boys baseball and golf. This is being researched, and information is being gathered from other area schools of the same size to use as a guide. Various proposals are being submitted by coaches and union negotiators to add coaching staffs at no increase cost to the district. The school board reviewed coaching assignments at the meeting, with more than one option offered for consideration and approval.
  • Building Committee met Wednesday, March 15. The group has hasked that the administrators (high school principal, elementary school principal and superintendent) provide a general response to the most recent floor plan being discussed.
