MLA over JWP 57-54; Advance to South Sub-Section Championship

 

THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Area (MLA) Boys Basketball squad, under Head Coach Shawn Naas, have set their sights on the Section 2A South Sub-Section Championship game following a three-point, 57 to 54, win over Janesville/Waldorf/Pemberton in the late game of a doubleheader at Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial tonight (Thursday, March 9). The Wolverines led by nine at the half, 29 to 20, and held on for the win. Marcus Boyd passed the Wolverines with 21 points. Levi Stoesz also hit for double digits with 17. Aaron Fast scored nine, with Tommy Kraemer hitting eight points. Fast also had 13 boards. MLA (18-9) will take on #1-seeded Springfield at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on Monday, March 13, beginning at 6 p.m., in the South Sub-Section title match-up. Springfield is 26-2, with MLA handing the Tigers one of those losses in the opening game of the 2016-2017 season at Springfield following a comeback win, 65 to 62. To reach the sub-section championship game, Springfield defeated Granada/Huntley/East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther of Northrop, the fifth-seed, 92 t0 40, in the opening game of  tonight’s doubleheader at Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial. Set to play in the North Sub-Section Championship tilt on Monday at 8 p.m. at Gustavus is the #1-seed of that bracket, Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (CMC), and the North’s #2-seed, Cleveland. CMC (26-2) downed the fifth-seed, Bird Island/Olivia/Lake Lillian/Danube (13-14) in overtime 85-83 tonight in the early game at St. Peter Public High School. Cleveland (25-3) defeated the third-seed, Mayer Lutheran (17-10), in the second game of the night at St. Peter, 73 to 65. The Section 2A Championship game will be played at Minnesota State University-Mankato, on Friday, March 17, with tip-off at 6 p.m.
