Both Cobras in State Class A wrestling earn medal stand

Both Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobra wrestlers competing in the 2017 Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) Class A Individual Wrestling Tourney at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul this past Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3, earned the medal stand.

At 106 pounds, Mountain Lake Public High School freshman Brett Willaby finished fourth. Willaby had advanced to the 2016 tourney last year as an eighth-grader, also at 106 pounds, finishing sixth.

Windom Area Public High School sophomore Alex Borsgard was fifth at 132 pounds. Borsgard, too, had prior experience on the mats at state. Two years ago, in 2015 as an eighth-grader, he competed in the state individual meet at 113 pounds.

+ Brett Willaby, 106 pounds –

  • Win with a 6-4 decision over Landon Byer of Frazee in opening round of MSHSL State Class A Individual Wrestling Tournament on Friday.
  • Win with an 11-2 major decision over New London-Spicer’s Blake Vagle Friday night to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday.
  • Loss in a 7-0 decision to Blake Legred of United South Central (USC) in Saturday’s state semi-final.
  • Win with a 4-1 consolation round decision over Taylor DeFrang of Dover-Eyota.
  • Loss in a technical fall (20-5) in 4:13 to Grand Meadow-Leroy-Ostrander-Southland’s Jackson Hale to finish fourth at 106.

+ Alex Borsgard, 132 pounds –

  • Win with a 5-4 opening round decision on Friday over Kyle Cavanaugh of Caledonia.
  • Loss in 9-2 decision to Tanner Pasvogel of Sibley East in Friday’s quarter-final match-up.
  • Win with a 4-2 decision on Friday over Nolan Booge of Park Rapids to continue on in the state tourney.
  • Win with a fall at 4:46 over Gage Zieske of Osakis.
  • Loss in a 6-0 decision to Brandon Reiss of Minneota in the consolation semi-final. It was a rematch of this year’s Section 3A title match, won by Reiss.
  • Injury default win over Brandon Ortman of Pierz for a fifth-place medal.

Welcome Home for Willaby, Borsgard slated for Sunday

The Welcome Home Celebration for Brett Willaby and Alex Borsgard will be tomorrow (Sunday, March 5, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Windom Area Public High School.

Those attending are asked to please enter the school on the office side. The reception will be in the commons area.
