Wolverine boys overpowered by W/WG

Lose to visting Chargers 70 to 44 to end regular season

 

THE MOUNTAIN LAKE Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball squad closed out their regular season on Monday, February 27, with a conference loss at home to Westbrook/Walnut Grove (W/WG), 70 to 44. The Chargers held an 11-point 31 to 22 lead at the half and added to the cushion in the second stanza. Senior guard Levi Stoesz was the Wolverine scorer in double digits, scoring 14.  For W/WG, Tyson  Elzenga scored 17 points with four assists. Anthony Ross added 13 pointsand Matt DePrez scored 12. MLA ends the regular season 15-9 overall, with a 10-6 Red Rock Conference record. The team enters post-season play havingreceived the #2-seed in the Section 2A South Sub-Section tourney bracket. They will play either United South Central (USC), the seventh seed or the #10-seed, Madelia, in a 7 p.m. game at the Mountain Lake Public High School gym on Monday, March 6. The USC/Madelia piggyback contest is slated for Thursday, March 2 at USC (Wells). Receiving the top seed in the South was Springfield. If the Wolverines score a victory on March 6, they will play at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 at Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial, and will face the winner of the St. Clair/JWP match-up (also played on March 6). The #1-seed in the Section 2A North Sub-Section was Cedar Mountain/Comfrey.
