Oh, what a night!

MLA over Raiders by 23; elementary students play important role in events

It was a successful “Elementary Night” for the elementary students from Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES) and Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) – as well as for the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball squad on Friday, February 10.

Oh, what a night! In the varsity tilt against the Fulda Raiders, the Head Coach Shawn Naas-coached club claimed a convincing 23-point Red Rock Conference victory, 82 to 59.

In fact, a quartet of Wolverines not only socred in double digits, but all four score 15+ points on the night. Kris Menken laced the nets for 19 points, and coupled that with eight boards. Marcus Boyd also scored 19, teaming that with six assists. Meanwhile, Levi Stoesz hit for 18 and dished out four assists, while Aaron Fast tallied 15 points, backed with five rebounds.

For the Raiders’ scoring attack, Leighton Gehl led with 17 points. Teammate Matthias Kunerth scored 13.

By the half, MLA had opened up the game with a 16-point cushion, 48 to 32 – including a long-range three-pointer by Levi Stoesz as the clock hit zeros.

The Wolverines now stand 14-6 overall, 8-4 in the Red Rock.

The club will face Murray County Central (MCC) at home on Tuesday, February 16.

In addition to watching the home town guys nail down the win, the elementary students played an important role in the night’s events. During halftime of the “B” squad game, basketball players from kindergarten-through-grade three showed off their dribbling and shooting skills; prior to the tip-off of the varsity game, MLES sixth-grade students, led by Mountain Lake Public School’s Instrumental Director Kurt Jahnke, presented the National Anthem and at the varsity half, the awards for MLES boys and girls free throw winners in grades 3-6, as well as for MLC upper elementary hot shots, were presented.
