Dorothy Karschnik

Funeral services for 83-year-old Dorothy (Syverson) Karschnik of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday morning, March 6, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake, with Reverend Peter Kufahl officiating. The church is located at 1418 2nd Avenue.

Burial will be in St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery in rural Odin, Minnesota.

Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home-Mountain Lake Chapel, on Sunday, March 5, 2017, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The funeral home is located at 420 10th Street North. A second visitation will be at the church the day of the funeral service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Dorothy Karschnik passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society of Mountain Lake-The Village.

Dorothy Marie Markquart was born on April 25, 1933, the daughter of Roy and Rosalind (Larson) Markquart in Lake Belt Township, Dunnell, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm a few miles from Dunnell. Dorothy was baptized on June 3, 1933 and confirmed in her faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dunnell on May 11, 1947. Dorothy attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Ceylon High School in 1951. Dorothy attended Mankato Commercial College, graduating on February 29, 1952.

Dorothy was employed at John Morrell Company on accounting machines in the office at Estherville, Iowam, from March 1952 until May 1, 1955.

On May 22, 1955 Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald Wayne Syverson. They farmed in the Trimont, Minnesota area with Don’s brother, where she did gardening and homemaking. Then moved to a farm north of Butterfield, Minnesota. They quit farming in 1964 and moved to Mountain Lake, where Don worked for Land O’ Lakes until 1991, when he died.

Dorothy married Arnold Karschnik on May 8, 1999.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, member of the Altar Guild, LWML and sang in the choir.

Dorothy was a member of the Mountain Lake American Legion Auxiliary. While living on Sixth Avenue in Mountain Lake, she enjoyed square dancing with friends in Darfur, Minnesota. Dorothy made lots of potato lefse. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, doing things with her children, going for coffee with friends and attending Wolverine sports activities. She was a tremendous caregiver to her family.

She is survived two sons, Joel (Deborah) Syverson of Zimmerman, and Minnesota Lyle Syverson of Mountain Lake; siblings, Caroline Schulz of Windom, Minnesota, Paul (Connie) Markquart of Sherburn, Minnesota, Mary (Dennis) Senne of Burnsville, Minnesota and Gladys (Earl) Tusa of Alpha, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Tyler and Karly; step-granddaughter, Marcy; son-in-law, Mark Oeltjenbruns of Jackson, Minnesota and several other relatives.

Preceding her in death were her two husbands, Donald Syverson and Arnold Karschnik; daughter, Jean Oeltjenbruns; son, Wayne Syverson and her parents, Roy and Rosalind Markquart.
