The Mountain Lake Area Foundation (MLAF) presented funds to nine entities on Wednesday, January 18. Monies were given to four groups who had submitted grant applications, with five others’ awards from “button counts.”

Those collecting funds from grants were:

+  $500 to Mountain Lake Heritage Christmas. Mountain Lake Area Chamber of Commerce teamed up with Heritage Village to put on a holiday showcase event for the entire community on the Friday following Thanksgiving that celebrated Mountain Lake’s heritage in a fun, festive atmosphere for the entire family.

+ $700 to Mountain Lake Christian for “Good Eats for Life” – Judy Harder from Jubilee Fruits and Vegetables of Mountain Lake will present a variety of classes to encourage students to make healthy food choices for life. Students will learn where and how fruits/vegetables are grown, why people should increase consumption of fruits/vegetables and sample different types of fruits/vegetables.

+ $900 to Mountain Lake Senior Meal Nutrition Incentives/Lutheran Social Services (LSS) – The Senior Nutrition Program (Senior Dining and Meals on Wheels) is operated in Mountain Lake by LSS at the Mountain Lake Community Center. Funds will provide 200 free meal incentives and transit tokens to eligible community members. The goal of this pilot project is to boost regular participation in the congregate meal site and assist those who may have mobility or transportation issues which may post a difficulty in getting to the meal site.

+ $1,000 to Christmas at the Village – Funds helped local businesses host a building for the Christmas season, with those businesses decorating that building in holiday lighting and decor. The goal was to offer a festive location for local residents and out-of-town guests to visitors.

The additional five groups were funded by “button counts.” Patrons at Maynard’s Foods are awarded a button when for using a reusable grocery bag, which they place into one of four receptacles. These included:

+ $145 to the Mountain Lake Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE).

+ $379 to Downtown Beautification.

+ $694 to the Loaves & Fishes Food Shelf. (The food shelf was also given a $25 cash gift card from the MLAF, given to the organization by the Southwest Initiative Fund.)
