MLA holds off WWG, 30 to 26
A couple of big runs for the first TDs of the game by Reynaldo Capetillo and then AJ Vongsy opened up an early lead for the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines 9-man game at Munson Field on Friday, October 7 against Westbrook/Walnut Grove (W/WG). Every point scored by the Wolverines was needed as the visiting Chargers moved in front in the fourth quarter before MLA could seal the win, 30 to 26.
Capetillo crossed the goal line with 9:43 left in the first quarter following a 61-yard scamper. The two-point conversion was a success, giving MLA an 8-0 lead. Covering 71 yards on the ground, Vongsy extended the margin to 16-0, the two-point conversion also good.
MLA was in front at the half, 24-18, but the stats supported W/WG – the Chargers running 49 plays, MLA 16; W/WG 15 first downs and four for the Wolverines.
After a second quarter touchdown by the Chargers, the Wolverines’ Capetillo added to his rushing numbers with an 80-yard score.
In the fourth quarter, W/WG battled back to take a two-point lead, 26-24.
The Wolverines responded with a 13-yard TD pass from QB Levi Stoesz to Drake Harder. Stoesz, still gimpy from an injury, came into the game in the final stanza.
On the night, W/WG was able to convert on several fourth-down situations behind the passing arm of QB Anthony Ross.
Vongsy finished the night with 112 yards rushing on 11 carries, while Capetillo carried the ball four times for 64 yards.
Kris Menken nabbed four catches for 56 yards, including a two-point conversion from QB Weston Osland in the first quarter.
Stoesz was 7-of-13 passing for 74 yards. The senior also ran four times for 25 times.
The Wolverines’ season now stands at 4-2, with MLA playing on the Cleveland Clippers home field on Friday, October 14, kick-off at 7 p.m.
