Wolverine football downs WWG; Set to play HBC Saturday afternoon
The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine Football squad of Head Coach Tim Kirk will be headin’ to the Hills this Saturday afternoon. That is, they will travel to Hills to take on Hills/Beaver Creek (HBC) following their 34-16 win over Westbrook/Walnut Grove (WWG) in a rain-postponed Section 3 9-Man play-off game. The game between the #3-seed, MLA, and the #6 seed, WWG was originally set for Tuesday, October 25, but a thunderstorm and heavy rains drenched the kick-off and the contest was moved to 5 p.m. today (Wednesday, October 26) at Munson Field in Mountain Lake.
The Wolverines took an early lead in the first quarter, 6-0 (two-point conversion failed), on a nine-yard pass from senior quarterback Levi Stoesz to senior fullback Jacob Suess.
WWG claimed an 8-6 margin in the second quarter, with Kyle Kuehl taking the ball in from three yards out. The two-point conversion was successful.
MLA stormed back in the remaining minutes of the first half; Stoesz taking the ball across the goal line in a nine-yard run (12-8; two-point conversion failed) and, with just four seconds remaining, Stoesz connected with junior AJ Vongsy with an eight-yard pass (18-8; two-point conversion failed).
In the third quarter, WWG cut the margin to two, 18-16, as quarterback Anthony Ross plunged in for a TD from the two-yard line. The Chargers tacked on two, completing on the conversion.
A Wolverine offensive surge from that point on sealed the deal on the win. MLA went up 26-16 (two-point conversion successful) with Stoesz galloping 42 yards for the score, and it was Stoesz again, with 9:20 left in the game, taking the pigskin in from 13 yards out to extend the margin to 34-16 (two-point conversion good),
And that would be the final score for the first-round game.
Game time on Saturday afternoon at Hills is 3 p.m. The Section 3 second-seeded Patriots did get their game in against Granada/Huntley/East Chain-Truman on Tuesday evening, advancing with a 54-6 victory. HBCÂ scored seven first-half touchdowns and had built a comfortable 48-0 lead by intermission.
