Rise up to top Fulda during 4th quarter push, 28-14
The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines Varsity Football team opened a new 9-man season with an on-the-road win at Fulda, topping the Raiders, 28-14.
It was a 4th quarter push that propelled Head Coach Tim Kirk’s squad to rise up for the win.
At the start of the final stanza, MLA and the Raiders were knotted in a 14-14 tie. In those final minutes, senior quarterback Levi Stoesz ran for two touchdowns on carries of one-yard each to break open the game.
The Wolverines’ two other touchdowns came from a 52-yard burst by AJ Vongsy, along with a one-yard shove-in by Jacob Suess.
Fulda’s pair of TDs were courtesy of quarterback Justin Dierks, the first a 14-yard pass from Dierks to Ben White; the second on a four-yard run by the play-caller.
MLA ended the contest with 48 rushes, for a total of 231 yards. Stoesz completed five of 14 tosses for 66 yards. The Raiders rushed 31 times, accumulating 120 yards, with Dierks connecting on 12 of 22 passes for 155 yards – but also with four picks.
The Wolverines will have their home-opener next Friday, September 9, with Nicollet coming to town.
