The seventh-annual participation of the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine girls and boys basketball teams with Coaches vs. Cancer events will be held in a doubleheader on Friday, January 15.

That means it is “game on” in the battle against the disease known as the “Big C.”

The program is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This now traditional winter sports season activity is held as part of a fund-raising effort in the fight to help eradicate cancer.

Here is the line-up of events for the evening:

Friday, January 15 – Girls/Boys Doubleheader versus Southwest Christian Eagles

+ Chili and Soup Supper, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Mountain Lake Public School cafeteria, free will offering collected. Proceeds will to go Walt Beedy, former Mountain Lake Public High School mathematics instructor, Mountain Lake boys’ basketball book/stats keeper for 30+ years – and cancer patient. Mountain Lake Fire Department is sponsoring the meal.

+ Wall of Hope. Donation of $1 adds the donator’s name, or the name of someone affected by cancer, to the “Wall.”

+ Silent Raffle in Mountain Lake Public School auditorium’s foyer. Raffle prizes will include elementary class projects. Winners need not be present to win.

+ Lightning Games at Half-Time of both the Girls’ and the Boys’ Game. Elementary students play at the north basket; high school students and adults at the south basket.

+ Recognition of and Moment of Silence for people affected by cancer prior to the tip-off of the Boys’ game.

+ Girls’ game begins at 6 p.m.; Boys’ at 8 p.m. Coaching staffs of both teams will be dressed up in support of those affected by cancer.

+ Those attending are asked to wear pink to show support in the cancer fight.

One hundred percent of funds raised (aside from the Friday fundraising meal) will go to help support the Cottonwood County American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life – and the lifesaving programs that help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back against cancer.
