Two-year sports pairing with MLC approved
A special election was called by the Mountain Lake Public School (MLPS) School Board at their Monday, August 17 meeting to revoke and replace the school district’s operating referendum revenue authorization. The current authorization expires in 2017.
The operating referendum planned to be revoked authorizes for taxes payable in 2017 in the amount of $1,347.45 per pupil. The new operating referendum would replace the current authorization with one in the same amount. The authorization proposed would be first effective for taxes payable in 2017, and would increase, annually, by the rate of inflation, as determined by statute, provided that the actual referendum authorization for any year does not exceed the statutory maximum for that year.
This referendum would be for 10 years, unless earlier revoked or reduced as provided by law.
The tax impact in taxes payable in 2017 for typical residential homesteads, apartments, commercial/industrial properties and most other classes of property in the school district would have a net dollar increase of $0 for such property with market values from $50,000 to $500,000. For agricultural property (both homestead and non-homestead), the taxes for the proposed referendum will be based on the value of the house, garage and once acre of land. There will be no referendum taxes paid on the value of agricultural land and buildings. In addition, there will be no taxes paid for the proposed referendum for seasonal recreational residential property, such as cabins.
The special election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the high school, in conjunction with the general election for four school board members. Any eligible voter living in the school district may vote in this election at the polling place for the precinct in which he or she lives. A voter must be registered to vote to be eligible to vote in this election. An unregistered individual may register to vote at the polling place on election day.
