Mountain Lake Area FFA Chapter members receive personal leadership training

Over 140 Minnesota FFA Chapter members gathered for the State Greenhand Leadership Conference (SGLC) at Deep Portage Conservation Reserve near Hackensack from Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 26 to develop leadership skills for their communities and home chapters.
Attending from the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) FFA Chapter were Jae Faber and Jenneel Rodney, along with Advisor Lindsey Brown.
The goal of State Greenhand Leadership Conference is to give personal mentoring to first-year high school FFA members. These members come from all across the state, represent unique sectors of agriculture and have been recognized as top leaders in their schools.
During the conference, the students covered an array of topics during sessions that focused mostly on personal development. Goal setting, professional leadership and career exploration were just a few of the topics discovered during the five-day leadership camp.
According to Minnesota FFA President PJ Aarsvold, the week was filled with opportunities for students to grow, build friendships and learn more about FFA. “Members took part in engaging sessions, heard from state officers as they reflected on lessons they have learned through their life experiences and participated in team building activities at Deep Portage’s facilities,” noted President Aarsvold.
FFA members connected with different individuals outside of sessions by participating in activities such as volleyball, canoeing and hiking. Each night, the state officers shared personal reflections with the campers, and the final day wrapped up camp with a banquet, talent show and dance.
Members who attend SGLC often go on to become chapter, region and state leaders within their FFA chapters and communities.
The leadership conference was made possible with financial contributions from the CHS Foundation, Northland Ford Dealers, Alliance Pipeline and Dr. Curtis Youngs as a special project of the Minnesota FFA Foundation.
