MLPS School Board names Building Committee at June meeting

Martha Standerwick reassigned as high school counselor

Mountain Lake Public School’s (MLPS) Board of Education unanimously approved the names of six men and one woman to serve on the Building Committee during their Monday, June 30 regular monthly meeting. Those seven school district residents include Bryan Bargen, Vern Peterson, Tom Appel, Jerry Haberman, Shawn Naas, Bruce Swanson and Cheri Hanson.

Attending the meeting were Michael K. Rich, PhD, executive director of the Southwest Marketing Advisory Center (SMAC) from Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall (SMSU), along with Jon Woehl, graduate student who is a member of the center and is on the team advising MLPS. SMAC was hired by the school board in spring 2013 to help the district recover from the December 2012 failed building bond referendum and move ahead, charting a path to lead to a successful outcome for the school and community.

Martha Standerwick reassigned

Faculty member Martha Standerwick, who most recently had been an Elementary Title I teacher, was approved for reassignment as the high school counselor on a 3-2 split board vote. Voting in favor of the reassignment were Tim Swoboda, Matt Gohr and Pam Hoek, while Chad Pedersen and Julie Brugman voted against the move. Board Chair Doug Standerwick, husband of Martha Standerwick, was absent from the meeting. She will replace Jody Lepp who was granted an extended leave of absence by the board.

Because of Standerwick’s reassignment, the board had to additionally approve the posting for an Elementary I Title teacher with Gohr, Hoek, Swoboda and Pedersen voting in favor, and Brugman, against.
