State status earned through blood, sweat – and an occasional tear

Two relay teams, two individuals head to Hamline next Friday, Saturday

Two Mountain Lake Area (MLA) track-and-field relay teams – one girls, one boys – as well as two individuals, have advanced to the Minnesota State Class A Track-and-Field meet next Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7, at Hamline University in St. Paul. Their state status, earned through blood, sweat – and an occasional tear – was achieved at the Section 3A meet held Thursday, May 29 at Redwood Valley Public High School in Redwood Falls. The top two relay teams and top two individual finishers in each event move on to state competition. (The top three relays and individuals moved on to section from sub-section.)

Relay teams advancing include the girls 4 x 200, composed of Mikayla Falk, Emily Jahnke, Brianna Soutthivong and Lydia Hildebrandt, which claimed section runner-up with a time of 1:49.66 (a new school record). Also racing at the state oval will be the boys  4 x 400 relay team featuring Jose Gonzalez, Jared Saunders, Caleb Bargen and Cody Klassen, finishing second with 3:33.13.

Jose Gonzalez will additionally advance to state in two individual events – achieving runner-up honors in both the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.53, as well as the long jump with a leap of 19′ 9 1/2″.

Hunter Quiring, claimed his career-best PR (personal record) in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12′ 7″, to end up in second, punching his ticket to the state meet.

Girls

* 4 x 400 Relay (Mikayla Falk, Whitney Klassen, Brianna Soutthivong and Lydia Hildebrandt)) – third with a time of 4:10.26.

* Brianna Soutthivong – fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.12.

* Mikayla Falk – fourth in the pole vault with 8′ 2″.

* Lydia Hildebrandt – fifth in the 400-meter run with a time of 62.29 and eighth in the pole vault with 7′ 8″.

* Hannah Stoesz – sixth in the shot put with a put of 33′ 9 3/4″.

* 4 x 800 Relay (Carmen Syverson, Jordan Syverson, Liana Blomgren and Brooke Fast) – ninth with a time of 10:52.38.

Additional girls competing at section included:

* Whitney Klassen – 800-meter run and 1600-meter run. * Mikayla Falk – 100-meter dash. * Carly Paulson – triple jump. * Brook Sunderman – 300-meter hurdles.

Boys

* Boys 4 x 100 relay (Ian Glassic, Zach Dickens, Reynaldo Capetillo and Jose Gonzalez) – third with a time of 44.91. * Cody Klassen – third in the 300-meter hurdles with 41.55. * Slade Harder – fourth in the 3,200-meter run with 10:38.60 * Zach Dickens – fifth in the 100-meter run with 12.06. * Caleb Bargen – fifth in the high jump clearing 5′ 9″, sixth in the long jump with 18′ 10″ and seventh in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.86. * Boys 4 x 200 relay (Demar Rodney, Jared Saunders, Ian Glassic and Reynaldo Capetillo) – fifth with 1:35.89. * Boys 4 x 800 Relay (Slade Harder, Ryan McCue, Tommy Kraemer and Jared Willaby) – ninth with a time of 9:16.64. Additional boys competing at section included: * Cody Klassen – 110-meter hurdles. * Viljar Ness – 1600-meter run. * Josh Fast – discus. * Hamlet Tanyavong – triple jump. * Ryan McCue – 3200-meter run. * Reynaldo Capetillo – 100-meter run.
