MLC Speech Team participates in different type of meet

Wicked winter weather limited participation; contest eliminated, performance stressed

The Fulda “Early Bird” Speech Meet took a segue on Saturday, January 20, with the wicked winter weather to blame. Due to the bad weather, 3 of the 8 schools were unable to attend, leaving less than 70 competitors to participate in the meet – but did include the Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Speech Team.

Since the numbers were so low, the meet host deferred holding a regular meet. Instead, the categories were broken into three different groups, with each orator performing just one time. Judges in each of the three rooms filled out critiques for the students, so the participants were given some ideas on which to work.

Those who presented at Fulda were:

* Elijah Stoesz – Informative

* Caitlyn Smith – Great Speeches

* James Hamm – Creative Expression

* Josh Raabe – Humorous

* Melissa Lohrenz – Poetry

* Katelyn Fast shadowed Melissa Lohrenz at this Speech Meet, but will be competing in Prose

Chanhassen Speech Meet

Elijah Stoesz in Informative and Caitlyn Smith in Great Speeches competed for the MLC Speech Team at the Chanhassen Speech Meet on Saturday, January 18. Accompanying them were Head Coach Kim Friesen, along with Rachel Wilson and Ellie Harder, MLC graduates and former speech team members, as judges.

Caitlyn finished sixth-place in the Honors Finals, while Elijah was 23rd out of 50 participants.
