Senior student signature series

* The 2014-2015 senior student signature series features area senior class students – and their own “signature” outlooks on a topic of their choice. A new outlook will be posted on Cross-Counties Connect each Friday. The series opens with point of view comments by seniors from Mountain Lake Public High School. The opinions can be found by clicking on the Family & Faith link on the website’s header, and scrolling down to, and clicking on, Outlook.  Their teachers are Brenda Feil, Kim Syverson and Debby Jass.

The Making of a Better Future

Necessary shelter and food is not to be taken for granted. These are the everyday necessities of life that everyone should have. But, people in Third World countries do not have these items. It is sad to see people waste food while others in different parts of the world are struggling every day to find a decent meal.

I believe that poverty could be fixable if people knew more about it, and if everyone contributed just a little. I believe it could be gond in a matter of year.

So, the question that everybody asks is, “How can it be fixed?”

There are many ways that everyone could help the needy. There are programs that have helped many of the communities around the world that lack everyday essential items.

On program, for example, is Outreach International, which specializes in helping people around the world with clean water, food and education. They also conduct programs that benefit the community tremendously, such as building small businesses to increase the residents’ income for a better future.

Another beneficial way to help the needy would be to donate to a local shelter, food shelf and/or program, including Outreach International. Donating just a dollar would feed a child for a whole day.

When I was researching this paper, I typed the word “poverty” in the search box on Google, and selected a web page called Global Issues. The first link was to an article that listed facts about poverty. While I was reading, I was surprised to see the fact that stated that hunger is the number one death in the world – killing more people than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Now that is a problem to be handled right away by everyone. Poverty will continue to grow unless everybody comes together as one to beat this problem.

I feel the need to share this information with everyone because poverty will continue to grow unless acted upon right now. I know that some Third World countries cannot move forward because of war, disease and/or a bad economy; but, with help, I know this problem can be fixed if we put great effort towards this cause.

As a supporter of the fight against poverty, I have a dream that one day poverty will be in the past. The present can bring change. And then a future generation could have a life with many possibilities of living that life to the fullest, instead of just trying to survive each and every day on an empty stomach.

It is time to change, and with the help of everyone’s kindness, poverty would be a distant memory.
