+ The thespians will be giving a performance of Salt & Pepper for the student body on Friday January 27, at 1 p.m., in the Mountain Lake Public School auditorium. The public is invited to attend. The play runs approximately 30 minutes.

The Sub-Section 2A One-Act Play contest will be held on Saturday, January 28, in the Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) auditorium. Participating schools, in addition to MLHS, include Springfield Public, Sleepy Eye Public, St. James Public, Martin County West Public and Jackson County Central Public. The festival begins with the first play’s opening curtain at 10 a.m. Plays will continue throughout the day with start times at the top of each hour. Awards will be presented at approximately 4 p.m.

The MLHS play, Salt & Pepper, by José Cruz González, explores family, friendship and illiteracy.  It is produced by special arrangements with The Dramatic Publishing Company. This Saturday it will go onstage at 12 noon.

Salt’s grandfather can’t read or write. He’s ashamed to tell anyone – and his silence has had a devastating effect on the entire family.

Salt, himself, can barely read. Pepper, his new friend, reads voraciously. Together they discover a past, the secrets of which are revealed in an old box of mysterious postcards.

Illiteracy and the high price it exacts on those who can’t read, as well as their loved ones is the play’s theme.

Salt & Pepper  is a gently provocative play about aging with grace, courage and humor.
