Along with monies for “button counts”
The Mountain Lake Area Foundation (MLAF) awarded two grant requests at their Tuesday, May 10 meeting.
Approved was a $830 grant to the Good Samaritan Society-Mountain Lake from the Healthcare Endowed Fun #739 towards the Color Jam held in August. Funds raised from the event will go towards a rickshaw bike for the facility.
The second grant request was a $2,000 award to Independent School District #173 out of the Education Project Fund #535 for the purchase of high school science classroom equipment.
Additional grant monies were presented from the “button counts.” Patrons at Maynard’s Foods are awarded a button when for using a reusable grocery bag, which they place into one of four receptacles. Grants awarded were $106 to Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), out of the Early Childhood Project Fund #731; $126 to the City of Mountain Lake for the Bike Project, out of the Health Endowed Fund #424; $525 to the Loaves & Fishes Food Shelf, out of the Permanent Endowed Fund #424 and $546 to Independent School District #173 for the indoor swimming pool, out of the Health Endowed Fund #424.
A change was made to the button placement options. The receptacle designated for the Bike Fund will be changed to City Beautification for the current period.
Also at the meeting, it was noted that the MLAF met – and surpassed – the matching $3,000 Challenge Grant from the Southwest Initiative Fund (SWIF). A fund-raising dinner at Peacemeals Restaurant and a silent auction will net $3,202.37 when all auction items are distributed.
The MLAF Board of Directors includes Wade Nelson, chair; Tim Swoboda, treasurer; Misty Karschnik, secretary; Vern Peterson, Brian Harder, Joyce Bucklin, Sharron Hanson, Kris Langland and Pat Weir.
