Annual Basketball Jamboree benefits Tim Orth Memorial Foundation
Three Wolverines – two from the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) girls basketball squad, and one from the boys team, will be helping to Jam the Gym this Friday, March 18, in the annual Tim Orth Memorial Foundation Basketball Jamboree. They will be a part of those representing the Red Rock Conference in the Red Rock Rock/Tomahawk match-up.
Games will be played at the Gibbon/Fairfax/Winthrop Middle School in Fairfax. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the event kicks off at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for those age 18 and under.
In addition to the games, there is great entertainment, concession availability and commemorative T-shirts.
Representing the Wolverine girls on the Red Rock roster will be seniors Signey Stoesz and Bailey Swanson. Senior Ryan McCue will be the participating Wolverine boy. As well, Stoesz will be one of the Red Rock Conference’s participants in the traditional three-point shooting contest.
The mission of the Tim Orth Memorial Foundation is to assist, financially or otherwise, children in the west-central Minnesota area who are facing substantial medical expenses incurred as a result of a serious accident or illness. It is an all-volunteer organization that sponsors multiple fundraisers throughout west-central Minnesota. The volunteers organize, solicit and conduct the events. Because of this, there are no administrative costs; ensuring that 100% of the proceeds are used to help the selected recipients.
One of this year’s recipients is Kevin Hakenis from Fulda, a 14-year-old boy who was diagnosed with brittle bone disease.
Tim Orth, the Foundation’s namesake, was a Bird Island/Olivia/Lake Lillian/Danube (BOLD) High School student and athlete when he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Tim will always be remembered for his courageous fight against the cancer that claimed his life on February 14, 1997.
