The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Lady Wolverines Varsity Volleyball squad had a sweet home opener tonight (Tuesday, September 1), sweeping the visiting team from Madelia in three games straight – 25-10, 25-8 and 25-21.

The Lady Wolves dominated the Blackhawks t at the net with their aggressive plaly. The team was led in attack kills by captains Signey Stoesz and Carmen Syverson, with six apiece, followed by Brook Sunderman, contributing five and Carly Paulson and Marta Stoesz each chipping in four.

Signey Stoesz had 18 set assists, while her sister, Marta, executed with five.

Notes Head Coach Cheri Hanson, “We played very well at the net – both offensively, with our smart and strategic placement of the attacks, and defensively, putting up some solid single and double blocks. There were a lot of tough battles and long volleys, but we played smart and executed our plan to keep the intensity level high and finish each play. There were quite a few free balls that we were able to take advantage of, and turn the situation into an attack on our side, but it didn’t leave an accurate picture of stats for our setters in terms of how hard they worked. However we were able to convert on many of these free balls because our passing was so consistent tonight and that made it possible for the girls to try some new things and place balls into holes in the other team’s coverage.”

Coach Hanson also enthuses about the squad’s serving, “We had an unbelievable serving performance out of Signey tonight who went 30/30 at the line with eight aces. Sister Marta was 16/17 with one ace and Carmen was 6/6 with a pair aces.”

Hanson was equally impressed by the team’s consistency. “The consistency keeps improving. To me, it was a highlight to see the girls battle back mentally during the third game after they had dropped down by a couple of points. They rallied back, fought to gain control – and after the lead went back-and-forth a few times, they took the lead for good and finished the job in three games.

“We are currently 2-0 on the season and hungry for another win.”

It was a stellar night for all Lady Wolverine squads, with match wins up-and-down the team circuit – from the Varsity to B-Squad, to C-Squad, 8th-Grade and 7th-Grade.

Next match is one week is next Tuesday, September 8 – when the Truman Bluejays come to town.
