There will be plenty of maroon-and-silver Mountain Lake Area (MLA) track-and-field participants to watch in next Thursday’s (Thursday, May 28) Section 3A meet at Luverne, beginning at 2 p.m. – as they get set to take a shot at state.
That’s because they are heading to the meet following their finishes in the South Sub-Section 3A meet held Thursday, May 21, at Pipestone.
As far as team standings go, both the girls and boys teams of the Luverne Cardinals were crowned South Sub-Section 3A champs.
The MLA girls were tied for fourth with Pipestone Area with 77 points. The Luverne Cardinal girls finished with a team score of 148.75, almost 60 points ahead of second-place Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton with 90.75 points. Springfield/Cedar Mountain/Comfrey took third with 79 points, followed in fourth by MLA and Pipestone Area, and in succession, Jackson Country Central (56 points), Windom Area (45 points), Murray County Central (33 points), Heron Lake/Okabena (26 points), Fulda (23.25 points), Hills/Beaver Creek (19 points), Westbrook/Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central (17.25 points) and Adrian (10 points).
On the boys side, MLA was seventh, compiling 51 team points. The Luverne boys topped the field with 122 team points, with Windom Area in second with 86 points and Pipestone Area, third with 84 points.The remaining field of team standings had Murray County Central with 62 points, Jackson County Central (59 points), Hills/Beaver Creek (52 points), MLA, Southwest Christian/Edgerton (45 points),, Fulda (43 points), Adrian (34 points), Springfield/Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (29 points), Ellsworth (17 points), Westbrook/Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central (12 points) and Heron Lake/Okabena.
Although teams do not advance, the top three relay teams and top six runners in each event from both the north and south sub-sections advance, Along with these automatic qualifiers, the athletes or relay teams with the four next best times or distances from the two sub-sections will advance to the section meet.
