The state’s 6th-ranked runner, Lukas Pierson of St. James Area, a senior at Butterfield-Odin Public High School (B-OHS), proved why by taking the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) Section 2A Boys Cross Country title in fine fashion with a time of 16:31.05 at Riverside Town & Country Golf Course in Blue Earth on Thursday, October 2.

There were 149 boys runners in the 5000-meter run.

The 5th-ranked Saints were also the second runners-up with 79 team points, behind the section champs – and 2nd-ranked – Mankato Loyola/Cleveland’s 67.

Backing the senior harrier for the Saints were:

  • Troy Parulski (St. James sophomore) – 12th, 17:08.59.
  • Seth Pierson (B-OHS sophomore) – 13th, 17:10.31.
  • Juan Castaneda (St. James freshman) – 24th, 17:37.14.
  • Alex Knickrehm (St. James junior) – 29th, 17:49.22.
  • Mauricio Vite (St. James sophomore) – 30th, 17:49.96.
  • Jackson Miest (St. James sophomore) – 33rd, 17:52.17.

Meanwhile, on the girls side, Glencoe-Silver Lake eighth-grader Malayh Metcalf, finished eighth with a time of 20:04.33 to earn an individual trip to the state run. Her sister, Majkya Metcalf, a freshman, finished 94th with a time of 24:05.33. There were 138 runners in the 5K. The two are the granddaughters of Paul and Jody Metcalf, and the daughters of Josh Metcalf and Amy Metcalf. Their dad is the Glencoe-Silver Lake coach.

The top two boys and girls teams, along with the top eight individual runners in each race, along with additional state qualifiers (top eight individuals not on either of the pair of qualifying teams continue their 2017 cross country seasons at state.

The MSHSL State Class A Meet state run will be run on Saturday, November 4 at Saint Olaf College in Northfield.
