MLHS students’ talents showcased in Friday’s Student Talent Show/Clash of the Classes

The talent was in the house Friday night, March 31, as the Third Annual Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) Student Talent Show hit the stage in the school’s auditorium. Also included in the evening’s program was the COTY (Class of the Year) Clash of the Classes for grades 7-12.

As the Music In Our Schools Month of March drew to a close, the Haydn to Hip Hop Class of music teacher/director Andrea Brinkman coordinated the talent showcase. Class members include Merel Caminada, Ruben Fentanez, Josh Mychackavane, Lexia Peters, Chandra Pfeiffer, Yahayra Sanchez, Alex Sunderman, Hamlock Tanyavong and Kassandra Tellez.

Judged as the top act for the evening was senior Ruben Fentanez with the vocal solo, “King of My Heart,” by Mark/Sarah McMillan, with Elijah Evans providing guitar accompaniment. The sophomore human beatbox duo of Eli Karschnik and Junior Louangsaphakdy finished second and the Cantina saxophone trio of Sam Hirsch, Yahayra Sanchez and Andrew Fast, with music from Star Wars, were the third-place performers.

The Senior Class of 2017 earned recognition as best in the Clash of the Classes with “Evolution of Dance.” The Freshman Class of 2020 (“The X Factor”) finished second, the Sophomore Class of 2019 (“Wedding Party”) was third, the Seventh Grade Class of 2022 (“John Williams Tribute”) was fourth, the Eighth Grade Class of 2021 (“Substitute Teacher”), fifth and the Junior Class of 2018 (“The Dating Game”), sixth.

Judges for the evening were Emily Adrian, Ashley Gohr and Travis Smith.

A freewill offering was accepted for a class trip to Memphis, Tennessee and Nashville, Tennessee – the Birthplace of Rock-and-Roll – this June.

The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) designated the month for the yearly celebration of music in schools. During all 31 days of the month, there is a focus on music education in schools across the nation. This year’s theme has been, “Change the World.”

Additional featured acts included:

+ Karen Soutthivong, Liana Blomgren, Tommy Kraemer and Sam Grev – “A. P. Band” skit.

+ Emilio Garcia de la Cruz, Joel Salgado, Emilee Xayonourom and Brandon Louangsaphakdy – “Tooty Ta: A Dance for All Ages.” Featured performer was Ag Teacher Hayley Faber.

+ Chloe Klassen – “The Call,” by Regina Spektor, vocal solo, accompanied on piano by Amy Bartsch.

+ Lucie Havlíčková – “Postillon,” by Jacob von Eyck, recorder solo.

+Joel Salgado – “Someone Like You,” by Adele, vocal solo, accompanied on piano by Ethan Klassen.

+ Olivia Christians, Eryn Friesen and Sommer Majerus – “Wrestle Mania” comedy skit.

+ Merel Caminada – Dance routine.

+ Kenna Gardiner – “Travelin’ Soldier,” by The Dixie Chicks, vocal solo, accompanying herself on guitar.

+ Jon Faber and Mace Herrig – “Mr. Toot” lip sync.

+ Liana Blomgren – “Jolene,” by Dolly Parton, vocal solo, accompanying herself on ukulele.

+ Alina Inthamthirath – Dance routine.

+ Josiah Gardiner – A “Josiah” original rap solo.

+ Haydn to Hip Hop Class – Synchronized Swimming skit – in a special performance.

AUDIENCE MEMBERS HELPED set the mood for the music by using these ubiquitous glowing gadgets – cell phones – which have all but replaced Zippo or Bic lighters.
