MLHS Senior High Band, Choir each receive overall superior ratings

Superior sounds.

The Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) Senior High Band and Senior High Choir competed in the Large Group Music Contest at Red Rock Central Public High School (RRC) in Lamberton on Wednesday, March 8 – and that was the judging conclusion following their respective performances.

The all-day event featured Sub-Section Bands performing in the morning and the Choirs competing in the afternoon.

Bands and Choirs are scheduled into a time slot in which to perform, and then spend a few minutes with one of the trio of judges in a clinic situation.

The overall superior received by each group means that at least two of the three judges ranked the performances as superior rated. In fact, the SEnior High Band received a perfect 40-out-of-40 scores from one of the judges.

The Senior High Band, under the baton of Mountain Lake Public School’s Instrumental Director Kurt Jahnke, performed “April,” by Aaron Perrine and “Joy in All Things,” by Brian Balmages.

The Senior High Choir, led by Mountain Lake Public School Vocal Director Andrea Brinkman, presented “Festival Sanctus,” by John Leavitt; “O Nata Lux,” by Morten Lauridsen and “Let Everything that Hath Breath,: by Jeffrey L. Ames.

These selections – and more – including presentations by the Junior High Band and Junior High Choir, will be shared in a March 20, 7 p.m. concert in the public school’s auditorium.
