Mountain Lake Public Library offering chance to win free tickets to Ordway’s production of ‘West Side Story’

 

 

 

The Mountain Lake Public Library, in conjunction with the Plum Creek Library System, is sponsoring a trip to the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul to attend the production of the musical, West Side Story, on Saturday, April 8. Patrons will have the opportunity to register at their local libraries now through Friday, March 24 to win tickets and transportation to the production.

West Side Story is based on a conception of Jerome Robbins of Arthur Laurent’s book. The production features music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1957, and ran for 732 performances before going on tour.

It was nominated for six Tony Awards including “Best Musical” in 1957.

The world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark musical that is one of the theater’s finest accomplishments, and is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

Set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950s, young lovers Tony and Maria are cught between prejudice and warring street gangs, the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

The musical explodes the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds and the dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes and focus on social problems marking a turning point in American musical theater.

This activity is made possible through the State Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, provided by the appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
