Top spellers, second-, third-place for each grade level recognized at annual competition
Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Elementary held its 2017 Spelling Bee on Thursday morning, January 19 in the MLC Music Room. Champions were crowned in grades one-through-six, along with second-place and third-place spellers for each class.
Oak (grades 3 and 4) teacher Nordis Olson was the spelling master/pronouncer, with Sheryl Fast, teacher for Sycamore (kindergarten), as well as Oak, the recording judge. Head judge and timer was Karin Stoesz, teacher for Cedar classes (grades 5 and 6) and Rachel Knutson, Acacia teacher (grades 1 and 2), cued the rounds.
Grade-level appropriate words were used for the students in each round. The bee followed the rules of the Association of Christian Schools International.
The champ from each grade received $3 in cash, second-place spellers received $2 and third-place spellers received $1.
The champion, second-place and third-place spellers from each of the six grades were as follows:
+ First Grade: 1 – Levi Onken, 2 – Taryn Marcy, 3 – Ezra Petersen. Levi won in 10 rounds with the word “give.”
+ Second Grade: 1 – Kirstin Nickel, 2 – Katie Johnson, 3 – Caleb Klassen. Kirstin (who was the first-grade champ last year), won in 12 rounds on the word “people.
+ Third Grade: 1 – Madelyn Oltmans, 2 – Layken Marcy, 3 – Isaiah Rete. Madelyn was the winner in eight rounds with the word “receipt.”
+ Fourth Grade: 1 – Lexi Nickel, 2 – Sam Petersen, 3 – Bailey Meyer. “Women” was Lexi’s winning word in the 15th round.
+ Fifth Grade: 1 – Tyler Dick, 2 -Bella Vidana, 3 – Meghan Johnson. Tyler won on the word “turmoil” in the ninth round.
+ Sixth Grade: 1 – Lydia Cavanaugh, 2 – Aiden Penner, 3 – Abi Renteria Rojas. Lydia’s win came in the ninth round with the word “provincial.”
