Lake Commission holds meeting

Jim Peterson to step down as chair; will remain on with group

At the Monday, December 12 meeting of the Lake Commission, its members addressed issues concerning Mountain Lake, Mountain Lake Trail, the lake’s beach – and dealt with new business.

Included in the new business was information from Mountain Lake City Administrator/Clerk Wendy Meyer that the Mountain Lake City Council had approved a $10 stipend per meeting for each commission member beginning on January 2, 2017. Each member will need to log his/her attendance on a claim form and submit it next December 1. Lake Commission members include Jim Peterson, Dave Bucklin, Jason Kruser, Heather Funk, Jean Haberman and Mike James.

In addition, Peterson will be stepping down from his role as the group’s chair, but will remain a commission member. A new chair will be elected at the January meeting.

As well, both Haberman and Funk agreed to renew their terms on the Lake Commission.

Mountain Lake Mayor Mike Nelson was in attendance at the meeting and informed commission members that he has contacted Korey Radtke to see if he would be interested in serving on the Lake Commission.

+ Mountain Lake information:

  • Learned the lake was frozen over on Friday, December 9.
  • Learned that the thin ice ads in relation to the lake’s aeration system have been published. Copies of the ads have  been forwarded to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The tentative date for turning on the aeration system is Saturday, December 31. The Mountain Lake/Odin/Ormsby Sportsmen’s Club will help place the “Thin Ice” signs. Kruser suggested getting GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates for the aerator bubblers in order to make it easier to place the signs.
  • Heard from Jay Schied that he had found some old tires in the lake, and had retrieved nine of them.

+ Mountain Lake Trail information:

  • Bucklin will contact the two contractors about submitting bids for two projects – sediment basin at the golf course and the storm sewer outlet.
  • Peterson will talk to Brian Hopwood at the Mountain Lake Golf Course to request permission to begin the sediment project in the spring.
  • Learned that the sign just north of the dam has been removed from its previous location and placed below another existing sign.
  • Learned that Administrator Meyer has contacted Randy Markl of the DNR concerning mowing up to the bench. Markl will look at the situation when weather permits, and make a decision at that time. The Lake Commission has recommended to the Mountain Lake City Council that mowing of the rustic trail should continue.

+ Mountain Lake beach information:

  • Mountain Lake Public High School Ag Instructor Stephen Funk will be contacted concerning getting bids for the fire pit and benches for the lake’s beach area by January 1, 2017.
