Halloween 2016 was not your 1991 snowstorm

Fun costumes, candy and laughter for fall-weather holiday – rather than inches and inches of the white stuff

The scenes in the photos above feature the end result of the Halloween Blizzard of 1991, 25 years ago. That weather event still holds the records for highest snowfall total of any single storm and highest snowfall total in a 24-hour period, according to the University of Minnesota Climatology Working Group. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico collected over Texas on Oct. 30 and swept north through the Midwest, where it met a wave of cold air dipping south from Canada. These ingredients combined to create what meteorologists called a “megastorm” that raged for three days, beginning just a few hours before trick-or-treaters started making their rounds on October 31.

Thankfully, Halloween 2016 was nothing like that. Afternoon temperatures today under in overcast sky in southwest Minnesota reached 61 degrees Fahrenheit.
