Plans set in motion for sediment pond, plunge pool repair

Leading the Lake Commission’s Monday, May 9 meeting was an update from Commission Member Dave Bucklin on the construction of a sediment pond at Mountain Lake Golf Course, and repair of the plunge pool at the City of Mountain Lake’s storm sewer outlet.

Bucklin reported that the engineer has those projects now on his radar and is set to develop a plan for the sediment pond. Bids from contractors will be let at at that time. It is hoped that the work will be completed this fall.

In other business

+ Repairs on the fishing pier were completed on Wednesday, May 4. Commission Chair Jim Peterson thanked all who helped. In total, it took 38 days and 290 man-hours to complete the repair projects.

+ Plans are to launch the weed harvester on Wednesday, May 11. Commission Members Peterson and Jay Schied, along with Larry Brandt, will create a harvesting work schedule. Mountain Lake Mayor Mike Nelson reported that the City will take car of winterizing the harvester.

+ Bucklin reported that at least 250′ of weed barrier will be needed on the Mountain Lake Trail. The decision was made to purchase 300′ of two-foot-wide Groundbreaker (five rolls). Peterson will schedule a work day with City crews sometime in June. He also noted that he had spoken to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) concerning mowing up to the bench. The DNR stated that they will be doing an extensive survey and would recommend waiting until the survey was completed.

+ Mountain Lake City Administrator Wendy Meyer shared that the trailhead kiosk for the Mountain Lake Trail, to be located in a park area near Casey’s, is on schedule to completed soon.

+ The Lake Commission will have no Pow Wow Grande Parade entry this year.

+ Discussion was held on where the newly-purchased pedestal grill should be placed – in the beach area or at Lawcon Park. The decision was tabled until the next meeting. It was also noted that a sand volleyball court is not feasible in the beach area.

+ Schied compared the Secchi disk readings to last year’s numbers. Last year, the lake clarity was 3′ 2″. On May 2, and again on May 8, the readings were 2′ and 1.5′, respectively.

+ Four thin ice signs remain missing.

+ The lake clean-up scheduled for Monday, May 9, was cancelled due to rain. The decision was made not to reschedule.
