swwc digital photography competitionFour Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) students earned awards for scenes captured through a camera lens at the Southwest West Central Service Cooperative’s (SWWC) Student Digital Photography competition held Tuesday, March 1, at the cooperative’s location in Marshall.

This competition for students in grades 9-12. In addition to the opportunity to compete, students also spend time learning from industry professionals. This year, photographer Kady Simpson was the guest speaker. Kady’s work can be viewed at: www.krosestudio.com.

In fact, the quartet of MLC students came home with five of the seven awards in two of the three photo categories. Those categories included Impressive Moments, Perspective on People and Nature. First, second and third-place awards were presented in each category. A “Best of Show” – voted on by the students – was also presented.

Earning recognition for their photos were:

+ Nature – 1st place, senior Melissa Lohrenz of Mountain Lake and 2nd place, sophomore Cheyanne Courts of Windom.

+ Perspectives on People – 1st place, senior Melissa Lohrenz of Mountain Lake; 2nd place, senior Josh Raabe of Mountain Lake and 3rd place, freshman Chloe Klassen of Mountain Lake.

Coordinating the competition was Gail Powlijewski.

Students participating in the competition could submit up to three 8 x 10 photos from any combination of the three categories. The photos could be in color or black-and-white. PhotoShop or a similar photo editing software could be used to enhance pictures, however, photos could not be created using editing software. As well, students presented a brief verbal explanation of their photos to the judges, and a professional photographer reviewed the photographs and presentations.
