MLHS Music Department presents Junior High/Senior High Concert

The Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) Music Department presented a Junior High and Senior High concert Monday evening, March 21, in the school auditorium. The concert took place during “Music In Our Schools Month,” and placed an exclamation point to this year’s theme, “Music Inspires.”

Performing groups were the Junior High Band and Senior High Band, under the baton of the Director of Bands Kurt Jahnke, as well as the Junior High Choir and Senior High Choir, led by the Director of Choirs Andrea Brinkman. Part of the program included Senior High Band and Senior High Choir two selections each from the recent Large Group Contests.

Both of the senior high music groups will be leaving Wednesday, March 23 for a trip to Colorado. They are set to return on Saturday, March 26.

MLHS JUNIOR HIGH clarinetists, from left, Delainey Janzen, Kiana Peters and Kelly Watkins. The instrument is also known as the “little trumpet” and the “licorice stick.” It is made of wood from the Mpingo or African blackwood tree, which takes a long time to grow and is dense enough to resonate well. The clarinet developed from a Renaissance instrument known as the “chalumeau” – an instrument similar to the clarinet was in used in Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. Mozart was the first major composer to add music written specifically for the clarinetm and by 1800, most orchestras included clarinets. Celebrity clarinet players include Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Roberts, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Alan Greenspan.
