New guard for the Cardinals

MLHS’ Signey Stoesz signs letter of intent to play women’s basketball at St. Mary’s

SIGNEY STOESZ, MOUNTAIN Lake Public High School (MLHS) senior – and guard on the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines Varsity Girls Basketball team – signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball for the St. Mary’s University Cardinals of Winona. Backed by her parents, Mike and Sonja Stoesz, her Head Girls Basketball Coach Wayne Klassen, sisters Marta and Margo, Grandma Marilyn Stoesz, Aunt Alisa Nickel and a bevy of staff members, fellow students and team members, Signey put her name in ink on the line. Signey leaves behind a Wolverines varsity career that features 1,171 points over the course of her sophomore (217 points), junior (416) and senior (538) years. In addition, she sports a career game point average of 15.82 points, backed by an average of four rebounds per game, three steals a contest and one assist a game. The Cardinals’ head coach is Brent Pollari. He is assisted by Erin Crane and Mark Kellen. The team plays in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, and the Red-and-White is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The 13 member schools of the MIAC are all private college and universities. In addition to St. Mary’s, additional conference schools include Augsburg College, Bethel University, Carleton College, Concordia College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Hamline University, Macalaster College, College of St. Benedict, St. Catherine University, Saint John’s University, St. Olaf College and the University of St. Thomas. The school’s enrollment is 1,300. Signey will be a pre-med major.
