The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) in the Mankato and Windom offices is advising NO UNNECESSARY TRAVEL for motorists in southcentral and southwestern Minnesota tonight (Sunday, February 7).

This area is in a Blizzard Warning from 7 p.m. tonight (Sunday) until 12 p.m. on Monday, February 8. Snow showers are likely tonight and tomorrow, with total snow accumulation of around 1 1/2 inch.

Tonight, expect northwest winds of  30 to 35 miles per hour (mph), with gusts as high as 50 mph. On Monday, snow showers before noon, with widespread blowing snow, mainly before 3 p.m. Also tomorrow, winds will be from the northwest at 30 to 35 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph.

With the forecasted dangerous winds and snow, visibility will be dramatically reduced – if not reduced to zero.

Some highways in the southwest corner are still slippery from blowing snow.

MnDOT snow plow operators will do their best to make highways safe, but motorists must be aware that they cannot see any better than other drivers and may be pulled off the highways for their own safety.

If you must travel, remember to:

+ Check updated road condition information at www.511mn.org or call 511; it takes time to get roads back to good driving conditionss.

+ Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.

+ Stay back at least five car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud.

+ Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They may also travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.

+ Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions. Snowplows typically move at slower speeds.
