Top spellers, second-, third-place for each grade level recognized at annual competition

Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Elementary held its 2016 Spelling Bee on Thursday morning, January 21 in the MLC Music Room. Champions were crowned in grades one-through-six, along with second-place and third-place spellers for each level.
Oak (grades 3 and 4) teacher Nordis Olson was the spelling master/pronouncer, with Sheryl Fast, teacher for Sycamore (kindergarten), as well as Oak, the recording judge. Head judge and timer was Karin Stoesz, teacher for Cedar classes (grades 5 and 6) and Rachel Knutson, Acacia teacher (grades 1 and 2), cued the rounds.
Grade-level appropriate words were used for the students in each round. The bee followed the rules of the Association of Christian Schools International.
The champ from each grade received $3 in cash, second-place spellers received $2 and third-place spellers received $1.
The champion, second-place and third-place spellers from each of the six grades were as follows:
+ First Grade: 1 – Kirsten Nickel, 2 – Sofia Flohrs. 3 – Harlie Krueger.
+ Second Grade: 1 – Isaiah Rete, 2 – Fairlane Penner, 3 – Cristy Renteria.
+ Third Grade: 1 – Ethan Schroeder, 2 – Daniel Smith, 3 – Bailey Meyer.
+ Fourth Grade: 1 – Lydia Rete, 2 – Tyler Dick, 3 – Meghan Johnson.
+ Fifth Grade: 1 – Aiden Penner, 2 – Lydia Cavanaugh, 3 – Jordan Linscheid.
+ Sixth Grade: 1 – Drayton Klassen, 2 – Eli Johnson, 3 – Miriam Rete.
