Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) senior Carmen Syverson was named the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Female Region 2A Triple “A” (“Academics, Athletics, Arts”) Award winner for 2016 by the Region 2A Committee on Wednesday, January 27. The announcement was made by Sharon Euerle, Region 2A MSHSL Executive Secretary. Syverson’s selection followed committee interviews of all female subsection winners in Mankato earlier in the day.

Syverson had earlier been named the Subsection 6A Female Triple “A” Award winner. (Her MLHS senior classmate, Ryan McCue – a participant in cross country, boys basketball, track-and-field, band and choir – was named the Subsection 6A Male Triple “A” Award winner.)

She will be recognized for that honor at the Girls’ Class A Subsection Basketball Final.

The Region 2A Committee will recognize Syverson’s accomplishments, and present her with the Region 2A plaque and medal at the Class A Girls’ Basketball Championship on Friday, March 11, at Minnesota State University-Mankato.

She will now advance to the State Class A level of competition. MSHSL officials will announce the four award recipients (a girl and a boy from both Class A and Class AA schools) at a special banquet held Saturday, March 12 in conjunction with the MSHSL Boys’ State Basketball Tournament. These four award recipients will each receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship. In addition, Region winners from both classes will be introduced courtside during halftime of that afternoon’s state boys basketball championship game.

Additional Female Region 2A subsection winners included:

+ From Subsection 5A – Jessica Nafe of NRHEG (New Richland, Hartland, Ellendale, Geneva).

+ From Subsection 7A – Anna Mohr of New Ulm Cathedral.

+ From Subsection 8A – Ella Wiebusch of St. Peter.

The Triple “A” Awards, presented by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) are sponsored by AAA and Fairview.

The purpose of the Triple “A” Awards Program is to recognize and honor high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts; to elevate academic standards and create greater awareness of MSHSL-sponsored activities and their values and to provide MSHSL member schools the opportunity to participate in a statewide program that supports, promotes and recognizes academic and extra-curricular achievements.

To be eligible for the “Academics, Arts and Athletics” Award, students must be a high school senior, hold a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, participate in MSHSL-sponsored athletics and fine arts activities and comply with the MSHSL’s Student Code of Conduct.

The award recipients are selected through a multi-level process involving MSHSL member schools, the MSHSL’s administrative regions and a special committee of educators, business leaders and members from the fine arts and athletic communities.

Syverson, the daughter of Steve and Kim Syverson of Mountain Lake, participates in the MSHSL-sanctioned activities of volleyball, track-and-field, band, choir, and one-act play.
