Do not travel in southwest Minnesota unless necessary

LATE THIS AFTERNOON, traffic was having a difficult time in southwest Minnesota. Just west of Mountain Lake on Minnesota State Highway #60, a semi truck and trailer jackknifed in the westbound lanes and at least two vehicles slid into the ditch in the eastbound lanes. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) advises no unnecessary travel in southwest Minnesota due to icy roads caused by dropping temperatures and blowing snow. The Minnesota State Patrol is reporting numerous spin outs and crashes in counties including (but not limited to) Brown, Cottonwood, Jackson, Martin, Nobles, Rock and Watonwan. Conditions are not anticipated to improve anytime soon. Plows are out, but chemicals are not effective in high winds and extremely cold temperatures. MnDOT urges motorists who must travel to slow down, drive for the conditions and use their headlights. Safety is MnDOT’s number on priority. Snowplow drivers and motorists have to work together to make travel safer and avoid crashes during winter weather events and icy conditions. Motorists should remember to: + Check road conditions at www.511mn.org or call 511; it takes time to get roads back to good driving conditions. + Turn off cruise control/Turn on headlights. + Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for everyone. + Stay back at leave five car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud. Snowplow operators will pull over when it is safe to do so to allow traffic build-up to pass. + Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They may also travel over the centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions. + Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions. Snowplows typically move at slower speeds.
