Saluting veterans’ service, sacrifice, loyalty

MLHS Social Studies, Music Departments; students host Veteran’s Day program

The Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) Social Studies Department of teachers Shawn Naas, Scott Boelke and Jessica Svehla, along with the Music Department of Choir Director Andrea Brinkman and Band Director Kurt Jahnke and MLHS students, will host a Veteran’s Day Program on Wednesday morning, November 11, in the school’s auditorium/gymnasium, beginning at 8:15 a.m.

The keynote speaker will be Mountain Lake Mayor Mike Nelson. He will be introduced by MLHS junior Thomas Kraemer.

Mountain Lake American Legion Post #389 will post the colors, lead in the Pledge of Allegiance and participate in retiring the colors.

MLHS Principal Pamela Anderson will provide the welcome and introductory remarks, as well as the introduction of local veterans attending the program.

Two MLHS juniors will share special readings. Liana Blomgren will present “How Veteran’s Day Was Named” and Sam Grev will read the Harry I. Thompkins poem, “No, Freedom Is Not Free.”

The selections to be presented by the Senior High Band include “American Anthem,” by Gene Scheer; “Manassas Junction,” by Gary Fagan and “God Bless America,” by Irving Berlin.

The Senior High Choir will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” by Francis Scott Key and “Stand Tall, America,” by Jay Althouse.

“Tap” will be presented on trumpet by senior Carmen Syverson, followed by a Moment of Silence and Reflection.
