Mountain Lake native Josh Metcalf, currently of Glencoe, ran to a state half-marathon record in his men’s age group during the Jeff Winter City of Lake Half-Marathon, held Sunday, September 13.

With his 1:09.20 finish, Metcalf is now the Minnesota State Half-Marathon record-holder in the 40-year-old age group. The old record was 1:10.48, set by Harry Cottrell on May 17, 1986.

Metcalf finished fifth overall.

Metcalf ran cross-country and distance in track (as well as playing basketball) during his high school days at Mountain Lake Public High School. He continued competing in cross-country and track at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He is boys and girls high school cross-country and track-and-field coach at Glencoe Public High School, and teaches elementary and adaptive physical education in Glencoe.

The Jeff Winter City of Lakes Half Marathon takes runners along a scenic route around Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun. The race finish line is at the Lake Harriet Bandshell.

The race is named after Jeff Winter, the City of Lakes 25K race founder who passed away of brain cancer on October 13, 2012.

The City of Lakes – USATF (USA Track-and-Field) certified – provides a great stand-alone challenge and/or a perfect training test for those running the Twin Cities Marathon or other fall marathons. It has been selected to be the Minnesota Half-Marathon championship race and one of ten Team Circuit events.
