Senior student signature series

* The 2014-2015 senior student signature series features area senior class students – and their own “signature” outlooks on a topic of their choice. A new outlook will be posted on Cross-Counties Connect each Friday. The series opens with point of view comments by seniors from Mountain Lake Public High School. The opinions can be found by clicking on the Family & Faith link on the website’s header, and scrolling down to, and clicking on, Outlook.  Their teachers are Brenda Feil, Kim Syverson and Debby Jass.

Gun Rights

I think we have more important problems to deal with besides what people think about guns – guns that we should or shouldn’t have.

With all of the violence going on, I can understand where people are coming from, but I don’t think taking our guns away will help. CNN crime studies have shown that more guns equal fewer problems because we never know who is right next to us and we are afraid to do something stupid.

I personally love guns and have been around them my whole life. I am an avid hunter and don’t want to have my guns taken away.

The biggest problem is that people don’t understand how to use them properly – and then something bad happens. It’s not that guns are bad, it’s just that people don’t know how to use them correctly.

The Second Amendment clearly states that we have the right to own and bear arms; that is right out of the United States Constitution. I’m pretty sure that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land – and it must be obeyed.

The government doesn’t understand how important hunting is to people. If I could hunt every day I would because of the rush and feeling that I get being in the woods and on the lake. I believe that we need to spend more time taking kids into nature and less time giving them all the gadgets such as iPods and gaming consoles. Just give them a BB gun, go out on the farm and show them how to use it. It’s like you can’t just jump into the seat of a car and think you can drive, so why would shooting a gun be any different when learning something new?

In my opinion, there is no wrong or right to owning a gun because people should be able to do what they need to in order to feel safe or do what makes them happy. If we don’t want to own a gun we won’t buy one, and that is how it always has been and should be.
