MLHS Junior/Senior High Band/Choir Concert to help celebrate ‘Music In Our Schools’ month

The Junior High and Senior High Bands and Choirs Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) will perform in concert on Monday evening, March 16, beginning at 7 p.m., in the school’s auditorium.

The concert’s theme will be “The Power of Music,” tying in to the celebration of March as “Music In Our Schools” month at Mountain Lake Public School.

Director of Choirs is Andrea Brinkman, with Kurt Jahnke as Director of Bands.

Performing first will be the Junior High Choir, presenting:

* “Shoshone Love Song,” a traditional Native American song arranged by Roger Emerson. Piano accompanist will be Kyla Perkins.

* Rhythm of Life,” arranged by Richard Barnes. Kurt Jahnke will be piano accompanist.

* The Junior High boys will sing a traditional Spiritual, “Swingin’ with the Saints,” arranged by Mark Hayes.

* “Kusimama” (“Stand Tall”) by Jim Papoulis will be the song shared by the Junior High Girls. The Swahili song’s refrain is translated into English as “I stand tall with love; with hope. The children are closer to the earth.”

The Junior High Band will follow, with these numbers on their docket, all of which the band will perform in a clinic in Madelia on Thursday, April 9:

* “Aggressivo,” by Randall Standridge, an exciting uptempo instrumental opener.

* Shenandoah,” arranged by Robert Sheldon, a lovely arrangement of the old folk during.

* The rousing march, “A Sight March,” by Harold Bennett.

Selections to be presented by the Senior High Choir will be:

* “Riversong: A Celtic Celebration,” by Roger Emerson. Accompanying the number will be a Celtic Band composed of Vicki Beckendorf, Eric Wenner, Eric-John Niss de Jesus, Caitlyn Oeltjenbruns, Levi Jahnke, Hamlet Tanyavong, Caleb Rempel and Daniel Harder.

* “How Can I Keep from Singing?,” by Taylor Davis. Kurt Jahnke will be piano accompanist with Vicki Beckendorff on violin.

* “Turn the World Around,” a West Indies Folk song, arranged by Larry Fanow. Piano accompanist will be Kurt Jahnke.

* “The Ground” from Sunrise Mass, by Ola Gjeilo. Piano accompanist will be Daniel Harder.

* “Music, Lead the Way!,” by Laura Farnell, with Daniel Harder accompanying on piano. On tambourine will be Ben Grev and on the descant, Signey Stoesz and Kaylee Wolle.

The Senior High Band will serve as the concert’s final segment, sharing:

* English Folk Song Suite,” by Ralph Vaughn Williams, considered by many to be in the top five of the classic concert band repertoire. The band will compete with his number in tomorrow’s (Wednesday, March 11) Large Group Contest at Red Rock Central Public High School in Lamberton.

* “Flight of Valor,” by James Swearingen, which was written in commemoration of the airplane in flight forced down by several passengers into a Pennsylvania field after being hijacked during the 9/11 attacks.

“Bugler’s Holiday,” by LeRoy Anderson, a classic piece for trumpet trio – featuring trumpeters Benjamin Grev, Levi Jahnke and Carmen Syverson – backed by band accompaniment.
