MLC Speech Team strong at Pipestone

Claim 2nd-place small schools trophy; Stoesz is first (and second), Raabe, second and Smith, third (and fifth) in categories

The six-member Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Speech Team had strong performances on both the team and individual levels at the Pipestone High School Speech Invitational on Saturday, February 21. There were a total of just under 300 entries in the meet.

The team was awarded the second-place trophy for small schools, just one point shy of Adrian’s first-place finish.

Individual results included:

* Senior Elijah Stoesz of Mountain Lake was double-entered in the meet and was first in Informative and second in Original Oratory.

* Josh Raabe finished second in Humorous.

* Caitlyn Smith placed in both of the areas in which she competed, earning third in Great Speeches and fifth in Poetry.

* Melissa Lohrenz was awarded a blue ribbon in Original Oratory and also double-entered on the day, competing in Poetry.

* Danica Dick received a red ribbon in storytelling.

* Also competing at the meet was Katelyn Fast in the category of Prose.

The team is coached by Kim Friesen. Serving as judges at the meet were Friesen and Scott Smith.

‘Sweet Treat’ event is this Sunday afternoon

* The MLC Speech Team’s annual “Sweet Treat” event will be held this Sunday, March 1, in the new MLC Music Room, beginning at 3 p.m. The team members will be performing their competitive pieces.
